DESCRIPTION
Julius Heinrich Zimmermann was one of the most influential figures in the European musical instrument trade around the turn of the 20th century. After moving from Germany to St. Petersburg in 1876, Zimmermann specialized in selling German-made musical instruments. His company eventually expanded throughout the Russian Empire and into parts of Europe, establishing branches in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Leipzig, London, and Riga. As a result, many of the instruments bear labels from different cities, depending on the branch through which they were sold. Zimmermann’s company offered a wide range of instruments, including string instruments and bows, woodwind and brass instruments, pianos, and even music boxes.
Although this instrument was not handcrafted by a renowned individual maker like the other instruments in our collection, its craftsmanship and tonal quality rival those of many violins made by celebrated luthiers. Numerous features indicate that it was built with exceptional precision and attention to detail. Unlike many German factory-made violins of the period, which often exhibit the exaggerated characteristics of the Stainer model—such as high arching—this instrument features a flatter arching that provides improved sound projection. The f-holes are elegantly elongated and cleanly cut, while the edgework and purfling are neatly executed. The varnish has a warm golden-brown to reddish-brown hue, and the scroll is finely carved with well-balanced proportions.
Based on its construction, it is evident that this violin was possibly made in Markneukirchen, Germany, and subsequently shipped to Zimmermann’s music store in Moscow, rather than being manufactured in Russia.
